Korean spicy stirred-fried chicken [Dak Galbi]

Hello everyone!

I want to introduce one of my favorite chicken dish ‘Dak galbi‘ which is a stirred -fried chicken type of dish. Dak Galbi is usually cooked into a big pan with chicken, vegetables and rice cakes. The chicken is bite-size and very tender! The delicious sauce covers all the vegetables, rice cakes and chickens which together makes a fantastic harmony :-) When I was studying at college in Korea, I enjoyed having a lunch at Dak Galbi restaurant in front of uni. The cost was usually just $6 for 2 people, which was the best deal for my pocket money ;-) Because it was such a popluar place, I had to wait almost everytime I visited. I remember when I went to class after lunch, other students looked at me hungrily because they could smell the Dak Galbi :) Oh, how mouthwatering it is! Yum Yum…

Spicy stirred-fried chicken [Dak Galbi]

Ingredients (serves 2)

  • Boneless Chicken fillet 600g  (chicken tight fillet recommended)
  • Rice cakes 120g
  • Cabbage 100g
  • 2/3 carrot
  • Sweet potato 100g
  • 5 sesame leaves (I forgot to buy it. But it’s always used with this dish for better flavor)
  • 1 onion
  • 1 spring onion

For the sauce:

  • 3 Tbs chilli paste
  • 1 Tbs chilli powder
  • 1 Tbs soy sauce
  • 2 Tbs cooking wine
  • 2 Tbs starch syrup
  • 1 Tbs crushed garlic
  • 1 Tbs olive oil (or sesame oil)
  • Sesame seeds and Pepper

*I recommend using a Portable gas burner and Multi roasting pan


1. Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces.

2. Mix all the sauce ingredients together in a small bowl.

3. Marinate the chicken pieces with half of the sauce mixture for 20minutes.

4. Meanwhile, prepare the vegetables and rice cakes.

  • Slice the carrot, sweet potato, sesame leaves and onion into 2-3cm pieces.
  • Prepare the rice cakes. Cut them in half (If it’s frozen, soak them in hot water for few minutes so that they become soft and you can separate them easily)

5. Lightly oil the roasting pan and preheat to medium heat.

6. Put all ingredients into a pan and add the remaining half sauce mixture.

7. Cook it for 5 minutes. Stir occasionally.

8. After 5 minutes, add spring onion and sesame leaves.

9. You can start eating while it is cooking.


  • You may like to add cheese, noodles or dumplings to the mixture. All Dak Galbi restaurants in Korea off these options :)
  • Once you’ve eaten all the chicken and vegetables you can make fried rice

(For this recipe you can use- 1 bowl of steamed rice, 1 egg, some chopped kimchi, seasoned laver, lettuce, 1 Tbs sesame oil to the remaining sauce)

Dak[닭]= Chicken

Gochujang[고추장]= Chilli paste

Gochugaru[고추가루]= Chilli powder   *’Gochu‘ is chilli
